The Coffee Triangle and "Las Mulas Mecánicas"
The Coffee Triangle and the willis jeep

The Willys Jeep, often called "Yipes" in Colombia, is deeply intertwined with the Coffee Triangle (Eje Cafetero), a region encompassing Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda, and parts of Antioquia. Introduced to Colombia in 1946 for military purposes, these rugged, four-wheel-drive vehicles were quickly adopted by coffee farmers in the region’s mountainous terrain, replacing mules for transporting coffee beans, agricultural products, and people along steep, unpaved roads. Their durability, ease of repair, and ability to navigate challenging landscapes made them indispensable for coffee production, significantly boosting the region’s economy by improving access to remote farms and markets.
The Willys Jeep became a cultural icon, embedded in the daily life and identity of the Coffee Triangle. Farmers used them for diverse tasks—hauling coffee, moving household goods, and even serving as taxis in towns like Salento. Their versatility earned them the nickname “mulas mecánicas” (mechanical mules). The annual Yipao Parade, held since 1988 in towns like Calarcá and Armenia, celebrates this legacy with competitions showcasing Jeeps loaded with coffee, furniture, or performing stunts like driving on two wheels. In 2020, Colombia declared the Willys Jeep an Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizing its role in coffee culture and rural development. Today, they remain a symbol of the region.
The Willys Jeep roars to life as more than a vehicle—it’s a lifeline. Since 1946, these sturdy relics of wartime engineering have carved paths through the muddy trails of Caldas, Quindío, and Risaralda, hauling sacks of coffee, families, and dreams. Dubbed “mulas mecánicas,” they replaced mules, transforming the region’s economy by connecting remote farms to bustling markets. Very popular the Yipao Parade which celebrates their legacy with gravity-defying stunts and colorful displays. More than metal, the Willys Jeep is the pulse of the Coffee Triangle, an emblem of resilience, heritage and cultural soul.
